"Red Rocks" by Helen Davison

Helen Davison is a professional artist who lives and works in East Yorkshire. Helen paints mainly abstract and semi-abstract representations of various subject matter. Her preferred medium is acrylic paint, usually on canvas, although she also uses watercolour from time to time.
The painting shown above, entitled "Red Rocks" is an acrylic semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by the rock formations around Sedona and the Grand Canyon in the US. The layers of paint have been applied mainly with a palette knife to add depth and texture.

Helen's artistic endeavours also extend to small decorative trinket boxes and notepad holders which she decorates, and to Amateur Dramatics.

Artist of the Week

"Blue Abscape I" by Helen Davison

Helen is an artist from East Yorkshire specialising in acrylic abstracts on canvas. Helen says about her work:

"I work mainly in acrylics, as I like their versatility - they can be used like watercolours or oils, depending on the finish required. However, I will try anything once, and am quite willing to take on a commission for someone if a particular idea springs to mind. 

My work is usually done on deep edged box-framed canvases, which eliminates the need for additional framing. This is a very popular format currently as it creates a very minimalist look on the wall. Having said that, I also do paintings on acrylic card and boards, which I can arrange to have framed prior to dispatch if you prefer. If you take a look through my gallery, you will notice that some of my paintings have already been framed ready to sell - "Hornbill" for example, plus "Freak Handles", and "Testing The Water", 

I tend to have a variety of subject matters from which I draw inspiration - my style is not restricted to just one subject. I think that would, quite simply, bore me silly! I need variety in all walks of my life and since I always have more than one painting on the go at any given time, it helps that my subjects are so wide. I do, however, have a fascination with faces, expressions and the naked figure, as I think the shapes created by our bodies are so lovely to look at. I also like to explore different textures within a painting, despite the subject matter, so I try to include some texture in every piece I create - whether I am using acrylic paints or pencils.

I sometimes utilise collage-effects within my paintings, such as in "Bark The 7th" where I have glued dried leaves onto the canvas prior to painting it, plus in "Exhibere Papillas" I stuck some woodchip wallpaper onto the canvas prior to painting it as part of the figure's clothing. I think this sort of effect creates a very textural look - I want my paintings to be touched as well as looked at - they are a very tactile item in the creation process so should be the same once complete!

My other main love is of bright colours and bold lines - I cannot imagine I would ever get to grips with an impressionistic style of painting as my leaning is far more towards the neat, precise brush strokes and lines such as my "A Bit of Orange" or "Not Everything Is Black and White". I do occasionally let rip with the palette knife and stray from my usual neat style, as can be seen with my "Abstract in Jet & Emerald", but more often than not I create images with several straight edges.

Artist of the Week - Helen Davison

This time we have Helen Davison as our Artist of the Week. Helen is a professional, exhibiting artist from East Yorkshire. She specialises in Acrylic abstract paintings and also crafts beautiful little hand-made trinket boxes.
The painting shown is entitled "3 Wise Men And An Interloper" and is an abstract expressionist painting rendered in the 3 primary colours with outlines in black. It is influenced by Picasso's painting "The Three Dancers" and Helen says:
" In this painting, I have used the three primary colours in order to represent the 3 different elements in this painting. However, as the painting progressed, I noticed another "figure" appeared in thebackground so I decided to use him as well! "

Artist of the Week - Helen Davison

This week we have Helen Davison as our Artist of the week. Helen is an artist from East Yorkshire who specialises in acrylic abstracts on canvas.
The painting shown is called Making Tracks.
It is one of three paintings that Helen has painted specifically for a gallery in Bridlington, East Yorkshire. It is worked in acrylic and inks on box canvas, however Helen's work is noy limited to painting. She is also a maker of lovely little decorative lidded boxes and miniature canvases on easles for display, all currently displayed for sale on Affordable British Art.

Artist of The Week - Helen Davison

This week, our Artist of the Week is Helen Davison. Helen is a professional, contemporary artist from East Yorkshire specialising in acrylic abstracts on canvas.

Of all of Helen's work, I happen to love this one.....there's something quite "hopeful" about it.....perhaps it's the promise of the new growth, or just the suggestion of potential ......but whatever it is, it makes me think of the future...what's to come....and reminds me of the potential within us all.
