"Purple Scottish Hills" by Amanda Hunt

Living in the Berkshire countryside provides many opportunities for our Artist of the Week, Amanda Hunt, to take inspiration from the surrounding woodlands and fields with their ever changing colours and variety of shapes throughout the different seasons. Sunsets and lively skies also provide strong influences and in each painting she aims to capture and demonstrate the emotions and experiences that have been drawn upon to shape and develop it. 

Amanda says:
"My paintings are distinctive with their strong colours and flowing lines and each one is truly unique. The painting shown above, "Purple Scottish Hills"is a peaceful lakeland mountain scene in realxing purple hues, inspired by the Cairngorms. When not painting, I devote much of my spare time developing my artwork, enhancing my skills, learning new techniques and trialling different styles and media."

Artist of the Week - Maureen Greenwood

Artist of the Week - Maureen Greenwood

Maureen Greenwood was born and educated in Dublin. She came to London in the early sixties and has lived in Stanmore, Middlesex, since 1965. From early childhood she has been interested in painting and in 1988 she gave up her full time job to devote her time to art.
Although she has attended art courses at various colleges, including The Camden School of Art, Stanmore College, Hendon College and The Harrow Arts Centre, she is fundamentally a self-taught artist.
She had her first public exhibition at the Stanmore Library in 1991 where her exhibits covered a broad spectrum of subjects in which she has used a variety of painting media. Her work is represented by Galleries in the South of England and has been sold in Art Fairs and Exhibitions throughout the country

Artist of the Week - June Green

"Moonlight Forest" by June Green

This week we have had June Green as our Artist of the Week. June is a self taught artist and calligrapher. She worked as a professional calligrapher for five years alongside a wedding photographer before her children were born. Now that her children are grown up, she finds she has more time to devote to her main creative outlet of painting.

June says:

"My favourite art is Chinese brush painting, Japanese Sumi-e painting and last but not least, Trompe L'oeil. I try to incorporate a flavour of these styles into my paintings, working mainly in Acrylics as I find this medium to be so versatile. All my paintings feature my first name signed in Chinese, to symbolise my love of eastern art."

June also enjoys working with wax in encaustic painting.....such as the one picture above.

Artist of the Week - Audrey Greaves

Artist of the Week - Audrey Greaves

This week we have had Audrey Greaves as our Artist of the Week. Audrey began painting seriously in 1992 after joining an Art Club. She  enjoys painting landscapes, flowers, wild life, portraits, pet portraits, abstract and naive paintings. 

Audrey says:

"At the moment I am painting a few still lifes in oils. My inspiration is found in the English landscape as well as scenes from abroad. I am also inspired by flowers in my own garden as well as parks and gardens that I visit and life in general. I paint in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media.

My work has been hung in several exhibitions throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire over the last 17 years and also in galleries. While exhibiting at the Ilkley Art Exhibitions in 1998 I was elected an Associate of the British Society of Painters. I have done several successful portrait, pet portrait and landscape commissions from photographs and would be pleased to do more."

Artist of the Week - Paul Dixon

Artist of the Week - Paul Dixon

"Hurry Up Before They Change!" by Paul Dixon

Paul paints in most media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels and never one to feel pigeon-holed, tackles most subjects - landscape, seascape, cityscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, surrealism and abstract. 

He has previously exhibited at the Ferrens Art Gallery, Hull, the Leeds City Art Gallery, Y.T.V. Studios, Leeds, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds and the Art Shows at Ilkley where he was a prize winning artist who was elected a Companion of the International Guild of Artists. He was a regular exhibitor at the Valley Gardens Art Exhibitions in Harrogate and the Original Art Exhibitions at Addingham, Nr Ilkley, West Yorkshire. He has also had two paintings reproduced as limited edition prints.

He has completed various commissions in landscape and portraiture and has work in private collections as far afield as Italy, Germany, America and Canada.

Artist of the Week - Peter Dillon

"Flax Reapers" by Peter Dillon

Our Artist of the Week, this week, has been Peter Dillon. Peter is a prolific painter who has lived in Leeds from his late teens. His artistic career started in the mid 1970s with an interest in scratch building models. During this time, he won a number of awards including the prestigious silver medal at the Royal Engineers' Expo. 

During the late 1980s, Peter's interest was taken with computer graphics and animation, but over the last few years, a passion for the more traditional style of painting has emerged. He is currently studying at Leeds College of Art & Design, and at the Swarthmore Centre in Leeds.

"Roots" by Tony Broadbent

Our current artist of the Week, Tony Broadbent,  is a professional self-taught artist whose  work is widely collected. Tony admits to being primarily interested in colour, form and the abstract representation of theme/angst. 

Tony says:
"I have found that people soon make up their mind about my work, they either like it or they don't".  Those who do like it usually end up buying more than just the one piece....they become "my regulars". I'm not into telling you how wonderful I am, or how I've progressed through life to get to this point, it is art: original and mine - and yours if you want it. Art is in the mind. I just, set the mood."

"The Rich Earth" by Angela Arnold

Angela has been painting in South Aberdeenshire since 2001, inspired by the local land- and seascape: the view of big skies and changeable seas from the cliffs of coastal Kinneff, where she lives, or the deep red earth of the Mearns.
 Angela says:

"In my paintings I try to capture both stillness and motion (often linked with the emotion evoked) – and maybe these are not so much opposites as two sides of the same coin, seeking the core of the subject. I also produce vibrant abstracts and most recently I have been experimenting with stark bl/wh, rather minimalist, painting.A lot of my work is done in acrylic on board, rather than on canvas, calling for a different kind of technique. I have developed a method of mounting board on an integral frame and the finished product looks like a box canvas, with painted sides, ready to hang - or to frame, if you wish. You will find my paintings work especially well in larger/modern rooms, with a bit of distance and space."

Artist of the Week - Jeannie Zelos

"Beach Huts at Wells" by Jeannie Zelos

As we march all too rapidly into winter, I thought I'd have a look for something to remind us of warmer times, from the gallery of our current Artist of the Week, Jeannie Zelos. "Beach Huts at Wells" is a lovely sunny painting of beach huts that line the seashore at Wells. You can see the tall pines that give Pinewoods it's name, behind them, and the golden sands and gently lapping waves in the foreground.

Jeannie is a self-taught artist, living and working in Norfolk. Over the last few years, though, she has extended her experience via personal study and professional tuition. Jeannie uses watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils and Encaustic media.

"Heat of the Night" by Peter Williams

Creating haunting, ephemeral Native American portraits, Peter tries not to be historically accurate but attempts to portray palpable and arresting emotions, suspending reality and presenting the viewer with the wild, unchecked passions and stoic serenity of Native America. He also produces stunning and highly detailed, photo-realistic graphite images of wildlife. Blending diffused colour with confident composition, intricate detail, sometimes dramatic movement but always a unique vibrancy unequalled by many other watercolourists. With a strong on-line presence as well as exhibiting several times a year in real world galleries, I have developed a large following of collectors and enthusiasts from all continents, my new work being sought after as demand outstrips productivity. Peter's work has been featured in the last 2 years'  David Sheppard Wildlife Artist of the Year Award show in the Mall Galleries, London.

Our current Artist of the Week is Andrew Voller. Andrew is a professional exhibiting artist who's work is varied yet displays a high level of accomplishment and consideration unique to himself. By balancing emotion with realism and construction against colour, Andrew creates colourful concoctions which are ardently overlaid with his ideas. In the creation of his work, and alchemy of opposing states,collage unrehearsed happenings and detail, into a truthful setting.

The majority of Andrew's work is on permanent display in Levitate Dallery, inside the Labyrinth, Mark Lane in Eastbourne. However you can see a wide selection of his artwork on the Affordable British Art Gallery.

"Spurn Point Lighthouse" by Rob Soar

Rob Soar is our current Artist of the week....Rob is a contemporaray artist who lives and works from his studio in the East riding of Yorkshire. His paintings depict scenes, real and imaginary, in his own unique and wacky style.

Rob has a wonderfully colourful, wide variety of work in his gallery at Affordable British Art....so much so, that I had difficulty in deciding which one to choose for this blog entry, so I "copped-out" and chose the first one in his gallery. Rob's work is fast becoming very collectable and he often works to commission as well as producing his own unique work. Being so bright and colourful, his paintings brighten up the darkest day.

Artist of the Week - Rachel McCullock

"Icelandic Poppies" by Rachel McCullock

This week, we have had Rachel McCullock as our Artist of the Week.
Rachel says:
"I started to paint simply for pleasure and very rapidly to my surprise and delight, my work generated a great deal of interest. This inspired me to experiment with innovative techniques and mixed media to develop my own style. I aim to create bold, vibrant, emotive and energetic canvases. The paintings range from representational images to textural abstracts, from wildlife to majestic coastal scenes with a great deal in between. I like to think that the use of striking colour is the defining indicator of my work.”

Rachel has participated in many exhibitions throughout the UK to wide acclaim; and has been published on calendars and Christmas and greetings cards. She is regularly invited to exhibit at the Artshed Gallery in Ware, Hertfordshire. Recently her work has been displayed at the Picturecraft Gallery, Holt, Norfolk. Rachel paints both for exhibition and by private and public commission.
Her latest large -scale commission is for the recently completed Child Protection Unit of the Lister Hospital , Stevenage, Hertfordshire where she will provide her unique style modern paintings to be hung in all its rooms, helping to create a sympathetic and appropriate atmosphere."

Artist of the Week - Donna Lowe-Fowler

This week we have Donna Lowe-Fowler as our Artist of the week. Donna is a self-taught artist who works from her home studio in Sheffield.

Donna says:

"My work is eye-catching & bold. Vibrant flowers in oils and acrylics will make a statement in any room. I am fascinated by the colours , shapes and folds in the flowers. I paint around the sides of the deep edge canvases so they are ready to hang. I was greatly encouraged in my painting when in 2008 when I won my first award in Sheffield ' Art in the Gardens' still life and flowers category this award was presented to me by Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough.

My artwork also includes Monochrome abstract Skylines of London and New York,also animals and scenery."

"The Arches of Folkestone Sunny Sands" by Simon Kenny

Simon Kenny is our new Artist of the Week. Simon was born in Dublin and now lives in Folkestone, Kent. He is a self-taught artist who originally started out painting part-time. However, due to the popularity of his artworks, he has now committed to working full-time as a professional exhibiting artist.

Simon says: "Although self-taught, I was heavily influenced by my French Grandfather - also an artist, and his friend Uria Monzo, the famous Spanish painter, who I met a handful of times. "

Simon's style ranges from the abstract to the representational and his gallery if full of origanl and interesting work.

I am at my happiest when creating art. To see the painting develop before me is exciting each and every time! To be creative is the very essence of who I am and it is my passion!

I love to paint commissions so please get in touch if you have something in mind--maybe you like one of my paintings but would like a different colour or some other changes? I will be happy to work to your requirements.
I always email a picture of each stage of a commission for approval before doing any more, that way you can have more input into the finished work of art!
Almost half my work load, at the moment, is commissioned, from people seeing my work that is either already sold or from viewing some of my work that just isn’t the right colour for the room that they have in mind!
I am happy to reserve any painting and except reasonable instalments monthly/weekly until it is paid for-please ask if you would like to do that.

I also teach people to paint in my very popular classes called 'Painting My Way'
I am a Professional Associate of the SAA (Society for All Artists) which means I carry their endorsement as a tutor and demonstrator.

"African Evening Trees" by Amanda Hunt

Amanda Hunt is a contemporary Artist who has a real passion for all forms of painting and drawing. The image above depicts a vivid African sunset depicted with umbrella thorn (acacia tortilis) trees and distant mountains. Warm pinks, oranges and yellows mingle to create a sky alive with colour. Amanda has used texture in the foreground to create added interest.

Amanda paints from her studio in the Berkshire countryside and started exhibiting her work in the summer of 2005.

Since then Amanda’s work has been attracting international attention as well as considerable interest throughout the UK. To date her paintings have been bought by collectors in America, Canada, South Africa and Singapore as well throughout Europe and the UK.

Artist of the Week - William John Ian Greenwood

Artist of the Week - William John Ian Greenwood

W. J Greenwood was born in Newry Co Down in 1946. He has also spent, quite a considerable amount of his life in and around the Mediterranean area, particularity Southern Spain.

This influence can be seen quite clearly in his work by the use of bold vivid colours. Another great influence which can be seen in his work, is the twelve years he spent in the show-business world, having been involved in the International Club business, he has many stories relating to famous stage artists like P J Proby, Solomon King of “She wears my Ring fame”, and Freddie, of Freddie and the Dreamers to name but a few.

Professionally trained he cites the famous Dutch painter / Sculpture Jits Bakker who he met and became friends with in Southern Spain, as the greatest influence on his life in relation to art.
Bakker’s art and sculptures, decorate many cities in the Netherlands but also far beyond Holland to name a few, Mexico, Portugal, America and Germany.
His exhibitions have graced the Laren Singer Museum. The National Museum of fine Arts in La Valetta Malta among many others.

Maureen also enjoys working in mixed media using different textures and collage, adding colour to create exciting effects and is always on the lookout for new ideas.Her other interests include photography and gardening, both hobbies assist in formulating her ideas for new paintings.She has travelled extensively in Europe where she derives inspiration for further paintings. She has been successful in selling her work in many places, including France, Italy, Ireland and South Africa.
