Living in the Berkshire countryside provides manyopportunities for our Artist of the Week, Amanda Hunt, to take inspiration from the surrounding woodlands and fieldswith their ever changing colours and variety of shapes throughout the differentseasons. Sunsets and lively skies also provide strong influences and in eachpainting she aims to capture and demonstrate the emotions and experiences thathave been drawn upon to shape and develop it.

Amanda says:
"My paintings are distinctive with their strong colours and flowing lines andeach one is truly unique. The painting shown above, "Purple Scottish Hills"is a peaceful lakeland mountain scene in realxing purple hues, inspired by the Cairngorms. When not painting, I devote much of my spare timedeveloping my artwork, enhancing my skills, learning new techniques andtrialling different styles and media."

Artist of the Week - Maureen Greenwood

Maureen Greenwood was born and educated in Dublin. She cameto London in the early sixties and has lived in Stanmore, Middlesex, since1965. From early childhood she has been interested in painting and in 1988 shegave up her full time job to devote her time to art.
Although she has attended art courses at various colleges, including The CamdenSchool of Art, Stanmore College, Hendon College and The Harrow Arts Centre, sheis fundamentally a self-taught artist.
She had her first public exhibition at the Stanmore Library in 1991 where herexhibits covered a broad spectrum of subjects in which she has used a varietyof painting media. Her work is represented by Galleries in the South of Englandand has been sold in Art Fairs and Exhibitions throughout the country

"Moonlight Forest" by June Green

This week we have had June Green as our Artist of the Week.June is a self taught artist and calligrapher. She worked as aprofessional calligrapher for five years alongside a wedding photographerbefore her children were born. Now that her children are grown up, she findsshe has more time to devote to her main creative outlet of painting.

June says:

"My favourite art is Chinese brush painting, JapaneseSumi-e painting and last but not least, Trompe L'oeil. I try to incorporate aflavour of these styles into my paintings, working mainly in Acrylics as I findthis medium to be so versatile. All my paintings feature my first name signedin Chinese, to symbolise my love of eastern art."

Artist of the Week - Audrey Greaves

This week we have had Audrey Greaves as our Artist of the Week. Audrey beganpainting seriously in 1992 after joining an Art Club. She enjoys paintinglandscapes, flowers, wild life, portraits, pet portraits, abstract and naivepaintings.

Audrey says:

"At the moment I am painting a few still lifes in oils. Myinspiration is found in the English landscape as well as scenes from abroad. Iam also inspired by flowers in my own garden as well as parks and gardens thatI visit and life in general. I paint in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixedmedia.

My work has been hung inseveral exhibitions throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire over the last 17 yearsand also in galleries. While exhibiting at the Ilkley Art Exhibitions in 1998 Iwas elected an Associate of the British Society of Painters. I have doneseveral successful portrait, pet portrait and landscape commissions fromphotographs and would be pleased to do more."

Artist of the Week - Paul Dixon

"Hurry Up Before They Change!" by Paul Dixon

Paul paints in most media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels and never one to feel pigeon-holed, tackles most subjects - landscape, seascape, cityscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, surrealism and abstract.

He has previously exhibited at the Ferrens Art Gallery, Hull, the Leeds City Art Gallery, Y.T.V. Studios, Leeds, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds and the Art Shows at Ilkley where he was a prize winning artist who was elected a Companion of the International Guild of Artists. He was a regular exhibitor at the Valley Gardens Art Exhibitions in Harrogate and the Original Art Exhibitions at Addingham, Nr Ilkley, West Yorkshire. He has also had two paintings reproduced as limited edition prints.

He has completed various commissions in landscape and portraiture and has work in private collections as far afield as Italy, Germany, America and Canada.

Artist of the Week - Peter Dillon

"Flax Reapers" by Peter Dillon

Our Artist of the Week, this week, has been Peter Dillon. Peter is a prolific painter who has lived in Leeds from his late teens. His artistic career started in the mid 1970s with an interest in scratch building models. During this time, he won a number of awards including the prestigious silver medal at the Royal Engineers' Expo.

During the late 1980s, Peter's interest was taken with computer graphics and animation, but over the last few years, a passion for the more traditional style of painting has emerged. He is currently studying at Leeds College of Art & Design, and at the Swarthmore Centre in Leeds.

Our current artist of the Week, Tony Broadbent, is a professional self-taught artist whose work is widely collected. Tony admits to being primarily interested in colour, form and the abstract representation of theme/angst.

Tony says:
"I have found that people soon make up their mind about my work, they either like it or they don't". Those who do like it usually end up buying more than just the one piece....they become "my regulars". I'm not into telling you how wonderful I am, or how I've progressed through life to get to this point, it is art: original and mine - and yours if you want it. Art is in the mind. I just, set the mood."

"The Rich Earth" by Angela Arnold

Angela has been painting in SouthAberdeenshire since 2001, inspired by the local land- and seascape:the view of big skies and changeable seas from the cliffs of coastalKinneff, where she lives, or the deep red earth of theMearns.
Angela says:

"In my paintings I try to captureboth stillness and motion (often linked with the emotion evoked) –and maybe these are not so much opposites as two sides of the samecoin, seeking the core of the subject. I also produce vibrantabstracts and most recently I have been experimenting with starkbl/wh, rather minimalist, painting.A lot of my work is done inacrylic on board, rather than on canvas, calling for a different kindof technique. I have developed a method of mounting board on anintegral frame and the finished product looks like a box canvas, withpainted sides, ready to hang - or to frame, if you wish. You willfind my paintings work especially well in larger/modern rooms, with abit of distance and space."

As we march all too rapidly into winter, I thought I'd have a look for something to remind us of warmer times, from the gallery of our current Artist of the Week, Jeannie Zelos. "Beach Huts at Wells" is a lovely sunny painting of beach huts that line the seashore at Wells. You can see the tall pines that give Pinewoods it's name, behind them, and the golden sands and gently lapping waves in the foreground.

Jeannie is a self-taught artist, living and working in Norfolk. Over the last few years, though, she has extended her experience via personal study and professional tuition. Jeannie uses watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils and Encaustic media.

Rob Soar is our current Artist of the week....Rob is a contemporaray artist who lives and works from his studio in the East riding of Yorkshire. His paintings depict scenes, real and imaginary, in his own unique and wacky style.

Rob has a wonderfully colourful, wide variety of work in his gallery at Affordable British Art....so much so, that I had difficulty in deciding which one to choose for this blog entry, so I "copped-out" and chose the first one in his gallery. Rob's work is fast becoming very collectable and he often works to commission as well as producing his own unique work. Being so bright and colourful, his paintings brighten up the darkest day.

"Icelandic Poppies" by Rachel McCullock

This week, we have had Rachel McCullock as our Artist of the Week.
Rachel says:
"I started to paint simply for pleasure and very rapidly to my surprise and delight, my work generated a great deal of interest. This inspired me to experiment with innovative techniques and mixed media to develop my own style. I aim to create bold, vibrant, emotive and energetic canvases. The paintings range from representational images to textural abstracts, from wildlife to majestic coastal scenes with a great deal in between. I like to think that the use of striking colour is the defining indicator of my work.”

Rachel has participated in many exhibitions throughout the UK to wide acclaim; and has been published on calendars and Christmas and greetings cards. She is regularly invited to exhibit at the Artshed Gallery in Ware, Hertfordshire. Recently her work has been displayed at the Picturecraft Gallery, Holt, Norfolk. Rachel paints both for exhibition and by private and public commission.
Her latest large -scale commission is for the recently completed Child Protection Unit of the Lister Hospital , Stevenage, Hertfordshire where she will provide her unique style modern paintings to be hung in all its rooms, helping to create a sympathetic and appropriate atmosphere."

This week we have Donna Lowe-Fowler as our Artist of the week. Donna is a self-taught artist who works from her home studio in Sheffield.

Donna says:

"My work is eye-catching & bold. Vibrant flowers in oils and acrylics will make a statement in any room. I am fascinated by the colours , shapes and folds in the flowers. I paint around the sides of the deep edge canvases so they are ready to hang. I was greatly encouraged in my painting when in 2008 when I won my first award in Sheffield ' Art in the Gardens' still life and flowers category this award was presented to me by Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough.

My artwork also includes Monochrome abstract Skylines of London and New York,also animals and scenery."

Simon says: "Although self-taught, I was heavily influenced by my French Grandfather - also an artist, and his friend Uria Monzo, the famous Spanish painter, who I met a handful of times. "

I am at my happiest when creating art. To see the painting develop before me is exciting each and every time! To be creative is the very essence of who I am and it is my passion!

I love to paint commissions so please get in touch if you have something in mind--maybe you like one of my paintings but would like a different colour or some other changes? I will be happy to work to your requirements.
I always email a picture of each stage of a commission for approval before doing any more, that way you can have more input into the finished work of art!
Almost half my work load, at the moment, is commissioned, from people seeing my work that is either already sold or from viewing some of my work that just isn’t the right colour for the room that they have in mind!
I am happy to reserve any painting and except reasonable instalments monthly/weekly until it is paid for-please ask if you would like to do that.

I also teach people to paint in my very popular classes called 'Painting My Way'
I am a Professional Associate of the SAA (Society for All Artists) which means I carry their endorsement as a tutor and demonstrator.

"African Evening Trees" by Amanda Hunt

Amanda Hunt is a contemporary Artist who has a real passion for all forms of painting and drawing. The image above depicts a vivid African sunset depicted with umbrella thorn (acacia tortilis) trees and distant mountains. Warm pinks, oranges and yellows mingle to create a sky alive with colour. Amanda has used texture in the foreground to create added interest.

Amanda paints from her studio in the Berkshire countryside and started exhibiting her work in the summer of 2005.

Since then Amanda’s work has been attracting international attention as well as considerable interest throughout the UK. To date her paintings have been bought by collectors in America, Canada, South Africa and Singapore as well throughout Europe and the UK.

Artist of the Week - William John Ian Greenwood

W. J Greenwood was born in Newry Co Down in 1946. He has also spent, quite a considerable amount of his life in and around the Mediterranean area, particularity Southern Spain.

This influence can be seen quite clearly in his work by the use of bold vivid colours. Another great influence which can be seen in his work, is the twelve years he spent in the show-business world, having been involved in the International Club business, he has many stories relating to famous stage artists like P J Proby, Solomon King of “She wears my Ring fame”, and Freddie, of Freddie and the Dreamers to name but a few.

Professionally trained he cites the famous Dutch painter / Sculpture Jits Bakker who he met and became friends with in Southern Spain, as the greatest influence on his life in relation to art.
Bakker’s art and sculptures, decorate many cities in the Netherlands but also far beyond Holland to name a few, Mexico, Portugal, America and Germany.
His exhibitions have graced the Laren Singer Museum. The National Museum of fine Arts in La Valetta Malta among many others.

"Red Rocks" by Helen Davison

Helen Davison is a professional artist who lives and works in East Yorkshire. Helen paints mainly abstract and semi-abstract representations of various subject matter. Her preferred medium is acrylic paint, usually on canvas, although she also uses watercolour from time to time.
The painting shown above, entitled "Red Rocks" is an acrylic semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by the rock formations around Sedona and the Grand Canyon in the US. The layers of paint have been applied mainly with a palette knife to add depth and texture.

Helen's artistic endeavours also extend to small decorative trinket boxes and notepad holders which she decorates, and to Amateur Dramatics.

Evening Reflections II by Ros Callander

Ros Callander is a professional, contemporary Scottish artist living and working from her home on the coast in rural Aberdeenshire. She paints mainly sunset paintings, seascapes and landscapes and her art has been described as “arresting and atmospheric”. Ros occasionally does portraiture, however her main love is nature and it’s influences on her native Scotland. Ros’s work, which is still very affordable, is increasing in popularity, often leading to waiting lists for her commissioned pieces.
Ros says:
"Being witness to rugged coastal scenery, stunning sunsets, sunrises and the breathtakingly beautiful Aurora is inspiration for many of my paintings, and I love to inject warmth, light and atmosphere into my work.

Artist of the Week - Jeannie Zelos

This week we have Jeannie Zelos as our Artist of the Week. Jeannie was born and still live in North Norfolk where beautiful scenery full of traditional woodlands, vast beaches and huge skies provide endless inspiration for her varied work.

Jeannie says:

"I've been painting for a number of years now and extending my repertoire of materials as time progresses and I delve further into the world of art.I describe my style as naive, and myself as a Colourist. My work has very vibrant colour ranges, often not what you would expect but it works!
Art can be a solitary pursuit and since 2006 I've been running a free arts forum for artists and people interested in art, just type my name and forum into google and you'll find it. I've learned so much from other artists there, and hopefully we have all benefited from contact with others.
I paint in a variety of mediums from watercolours through to encaustic, a method used over 2,000 years ago. For me art is a journey and by not restricting myself to one media I have the freedom to take my art to a range of possibilities. Over the last few years I have extended my experience via personal study and professional tuition and now use watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils, and latest is the encaustic (beeswax) paints. With the encaustics I seek to reach the very essence of the subject through pure abstraction, and find that the beeswax - maybe because its such an organic material- works really well for this."

This week we have Andrew Voller as our Artist of the Week. Andrew is a professional artist whose unique view of life is evident in his work. His style is somewhat eclectic, combining recognisable subject form with seemingly unrelated reference images which met together and meld the work in a harmonious visual storybook.

The painting above, entitled "Fun Guys" is a visual statment of the joy of childhood which Andrew describes as "Crying with laughter, this is the best world of moment ever."

"Twiss Green" by Rachel McCullock

Rachel McCullock is our new Artist of the Week. Rachel paints mainly abstract work, a lot of which are highly textured, producing paintings which invite the viewer to participate in a very tactile interaction.

Rachel says: "I started to paint simply for pleasure and very rapidly to my surprise and delight, my work generated a great deal of interest. This inspired me to experiment with innovative techniques and mixed media to develop my own style. I aim to create bold, vibrant, emotive and energetic canvases. The paintings range from representational images to textural abstracts, from wildlife to majestic coastal scenes with a great deal in between. I like to think that the use of striking colour is the defining indicator of my work.”

Rachel has participated in many exhibitions throughout the UK to wide acclaim and has been published on calendars and Christmas and greetings cards. She is regularly invited to exhibit at the Artshed Gallery in Ware, Hertfordshire. Recently her work has been displayed at the Picturecraft Gallery, Holt, Norfolk. Rachel paints both for exhibition and by private and public commission.
Her latest large -scale commission is for the recently completed Child Protection Unit of the Lister Hospital , Stevenage, Hertfordshire where she will provide her unique style modern paintings to be hung in all its rooms, helping to create a sympathetic and appropriate atmosphere.

Diane Jennings is one of our longest-standing member artists and is an accomplished Art Tutor as well as Artist. She works from and conducts her "Painting My Way" art workshops in and around Ludlow, Shropshire.

Diane says: " I work in several different mediums including oil, acrylic and encaustic wax. I love to paint bright, bold paintings to brighten any wall and I also paint quieter,calmer, more relaxing paintings too!

I am at my happiest when creating art,to see the painting develop before me is exciting each and every time! To be creative is the very essence of who I am and it is my passion! I also teach people to paint in my very popular classes called 'Painting My Way'

Angel Face Rose is a deep mauve-lavender, petal edges blushed ruby flower. It has a strong, citrus fragrance and large striking cluster-flowers. The petals lie in a large clustered, high-centered, ruffled bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. This oil painting is painted around the edge and is signed by the Artist and ready to hang.

Donna Lowe-Fowler is a self taught contemporary artist, working from her studio in Sheffield. Donna says:
" I specialise in close up shots of flowers. In the past have completed short photography courses which has increased the good interpretation and availability of photographs I use for inspiration .

My Eye-catching bold, vibrant flowers in oils and acrylics will make a statement in any room. I am fascinated by the colours , shapes and folds in the flowers. I paint around the sides of the deep edge canvases so they are ready to hang. I was greatly encouraged in my painting when in 2007 when I won my first award in Sheffield ' Art in the Gardens' still life and flowers category this award was presented to me by Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough.

"Art is my passion, as well as my full time career. I was born, live and paint in sunny Yorkshire, UK", says Gaynor henaghan.....our current Artist of the Week.

"I paint both contemporary and more traditional pieces, depending on the mood and what is influencing me at the time! My main inspiration is colour, light and structure, although ideas often come from the most unexpected places - from facial expressions to the spoken word... you'd be amazed!

I work a great deal with texture as it gives a whole new dimension to the artwork itself - capturing the visual aspect but also making you want to feel it - I love the fact that my work can be open to different interpretation by each person that views it - it can be endless, which is what I aim to achieve in my abstract work.

Artist of the Week - Maureen Greenwood

Maureen Greenwood was born and educated in Dublin. She came to London in the early sixties and has lived in Stanmore, Middlesex, since 1965.

From early childhood she has been interested in painting and in 1988 she gave up her full time job to devote her time to art. Although she has attended art courses at various colleges, including The Camden School of Art, Stanmore College, Hendon College and The Harrow Arts Centre, she is fundamentally a self-taught artist.

She had her first public exhibition at the Stanmore Library in 1991 where her exhibits covered a broad spectrum of subjects in which she has used a variety of painting media. Her work is represented by Galleries in the South of England and has been sold in Art Fairs and Exhibitions throughout the country.

Maureen`s vibrant interpretation of semi-abstract landscapes, seascapes and skies shows her great love of colour. She also enjoys working in mixed media using different textures and collage, adding colour to create exciting effects and is always on the lookout for new ideas.

Her other interests include photography and gardening, both hobbies assist in formulating her ideas for new paintings.

She has travelled extensively in Europe where she derives inspiration for further paintings. She has been successful in selling her work in many places, including France, Italy, Ireland and South Africa.

"Simply Red" by Trevor Ferguson

"Simply Red" is an unusual dramatic, romantic and atmospheric study of a female nude. It is painted in oils on a 20mm deep canvas panel. This is one of Trevor's latest nude studies. Trevor's aim is to achieve realism while at the same time creating a scene or picture which may or may not exist in real life. Many of his works are based on French life, portraits and the female form.

Trevor says:

"My love of human faces prompts me to paint portraits – again using photographs – either supplied by clients or taken by myself I try to capture the character & personality of the sitter.
I have learned a lot by studying the techniques of the old masters and in some ways by trying to emulate them – I feel I might be half way there – the old part anyway – not too sure about the master part though. My animal portraits are treated in the same way."

"One Day in Autumn" by Paul Dixon

Autumn, that fleeting time of year when the trees glow with colour and cry out to be painted before the wind and rain strips them bare. This is a beautifully worked painting by Paul Dixon. Paul paints in most media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels and never one to feel pigeon-holed, tackles most subjects - landscape, seascape, cityscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, surrealism and abstract.

He has previously exhibited at the Ferrens Art Gallery, Hull, the Leeds City Art Gallery, Y.T.V. Studios, Leeds, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds and the Art Shows at Ilkley where he was a prize winning artist who was elected a Companion of the International Guild of Artists. He was a regular exhibitor at the Valley Gardens Art Exhibitions in Harrogate and the Original Art Exhibitions at Addingham, Nr Ilkley, West Yorkshire. He has also had two paintings reproduced as limited edition prints.
He has completed various commissions in landscape and portraiture and has work in private collections as far afield as Italy, Germany, America and Canada.

"Blue Abscape I" by Helen Davison

Helen is an artist from East Yorkshire specialising in acrylic abstracts on canvas. Helen says about her work:

"I work mainly in acrylics, as I like their versatility - they can be used like watercolours or oils, depending on the finish required. However, I will try anything once, and am quite willing to take on a commission for someone if a particular idea springs to mind.

My work is usually done on deep edged box-framed canvases, which eliminates the need for additional framing. This is a very popular format currently as it creates a very minimalist look on the wall. Having said that, I also do paintings on acrylic card and boards, which I can arrange to have framed prior to dispatch if you prefer. If you take a look through my gallery, you will notice that some of my paintings have already been framed ready to sell - "Hornbill" for example, plus "Freak Handles", and "Testing The Water",

I tend to have a variety of subject matters from which I draw inspiration - my style is not restricted to just one subject. I think that would, quite simply, bore me silly! I need variety in all walks of my life and since I always have more than one painting on the go at any given time, it helps that my subjects are so wide. I do, however, have a fascination with faces, expressions and the naked figure, as I think the shapes created by our bodies are so lovely to look at. I also like to explore different textures within a painting, despite the subject matter, so I try to include some texture in every piece I create - whether I am using acrylic paints or pencils.

I sometimes utilise collage-effects within my paintings, such as in "Bark The 7th" where I have glued dried leaves onto the canvas prior to painting it, plus in "Exhibere Papillas" I stuck some woodchip wallpaper onto the canvas prior to painting it as part of the figure's clothing. I think this sort of effect creates a very textural look - I want my paintings to be touched as well as looked at - they are a very tactile item in the creation process so should be the same once complete!

My other main love is of bright colours and bold lines - I cannot imagine I would ever get to grips with an impressionistic style of painting as my leaning is far more towards the neat, precise brush strokes and lines such as my "A Bit of Orange" or "Not Everything Is Black and White". I do occasionally let rip with the palette knife and stray from my usual neat style, as can be seen with my "Abstract in Jet & Emerald", but more often than not I create images with several straight edges.

"Stonehaven coast from foot of Dunnottar" by Ros Callander

"Stonehaven coast from foot of Dunnottar" is an original oil painting by artist Ros Callander. It depicts a soft and dreamy view of the coast around Stonehaven as seen when looking north, standing at the foot of the Dunnottar Castle escarpment. Ros Callander is a professional, contemporary Scottish artist. She paints mainly sunset paintings, seascapes and landscapes and her art has been described as “arresting and atmospheric”. Ros occasionally does portraiture, however her main love is nature and it’s influences on her native Scotland. Ros’s work, which is still very affordable, is increasing in popularity, often leading to waiting lists for her commissioned pieces.

Ros's Statement: "For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed drawing and painting. As a young girl, my passion for horses led me to drawing animals, and from there to drawing children and adults. My favourite mediums by far are acrylics, oils, watercolours and pencil drawings.
I hold a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout the year at various venues, one of which was opened by the (at the time) current Miss UK - Nicola Jolly. This was featured in the local area broadsheet/press. I have exhibited throughout Scotland and also in London, Paris and Berlin. I have had work photographed for Interior Design magazines - the latest of which was the prestigious "Homes & Interiors Scotland" magazine (Issue 43) and "25 Beautiful Homes", leading to a marked increase in interest in my work both in Scotland and throughout the UK.
I now live in the picturesque North East of Scotland, in a small rural coastal village, having previously lived and worked both in London and Southampton.
Being witness to rugged coastal scenery, stunning sunsets, sunrises and the breathtakingly beautiful Aurora is inspiration for many of my paintings, and I love to inject warmth, light and atmosphere into my work.
I feel very privileged to know that a piece of art which I have poured my heart and soul into creating, finds it's own place in the hearts of other people"

Bluebells by Melanie Barrett

After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2003, Melanie went on to obtain a Masters in Painting from Wimbledon School of Art in 2004. Since then she has been continuing to paint and draw, focusing on portraiture, and in particular the narrative within painting. She has taught Art in schools in Mexico and Uganda, and to date has exhibited in various venues in Newcastle, Hackney, Kings Cross, the Discerning Eye Exhibition 2003, London Art Fair 2005, and in Glasgow for the regional finals of Channel Five's Big Art Competition.

Melanie says: "I am fascinated by the drama that can be created by the interplay of light and dark within a composition, and am preoccupied with recreating the beauty that can be captured in fleeting moments of every day life.
My work is heavily influenced by photography and I take inspiration from the work of Sickert, Degas and more recently, Tim Gardner."

This week we have Tina Ashton as our Artist of the week.

"Let Autumn Begin" by Tina Ashton

Tina Ashton was born in Caerphilly, South Wales in 1961 and amongst her memories of education, at a welsh speaking shcool, she remembers enjoying art and recalls winning prizes in creative competitions. However, she also remembers her disappointment when discouraged from studying Art for school qualifications in favour of more academic subjects. Tina’s career then took a very different path commencing with several years service with the Royal Air Force in Air Traffic Control followed by a long career in administration. In time Tina’s career also took a back seat to married life and bringing up two sons.

Many years later at the age of 39 Tina gave up her career and returned to full time education to study Art and Design. Creating art and particularly painting again was a “very personal and emotional awakening” she recollects, and indeed she hopes it is just the beginning of a long creative journey.

In 2003 Tina was proud to win the prestigious Malcolm Kendal Award in recognition of her talented contribution towards a motivated and artistic awareness. In the years to follow Tina went on to exhibit her work regularly across the UK, amongst them several solo exhibitions and a group exhibition at one of London’s Cork Street Galleries.

During the past 10 years much of Tina’s collection of work has been dominated by her modern portraiture in Acrylic. These bold, colourful portraits of today’s woman have proved very successful for her, although they are constantly evolving and are just a small part of a much wider body of work these days.

More recently, from her studio on the edge of the Buckinghamshire countryside, Tina has been painting on the theme of Love and Romance and her collection of semi-abstract paintings inspired by Lovers has been selling to private and corporate collectors across the world. Tina has a love of all things romantic and particularly old black and white movies which has fed and inspired this series of work, although the strong colours and loose fluidity of these new works are a much more modern statement. “I believe one of the greatest challenges for an artist is to display on canvas the special and intimate moments that lovers share and I hope that I go some way towards achieving that” Says Tina

Angela Arnold is our Artist of the Week, this week.

"Showery Day, St Andrews" by Angela Arnold

Angela is a professional exhibiting artist who lives and works in the North East of Scotland. Angela says:

" I spent most of my youth on the Continent: born in Germany, I have also lived in France, Spain, Holland, Belgium...finally settling in Scotland in 1976.

I started out as a writer, with two books published (on psychological astrology, which I also practise), as well as occasional poetry. For thirteen years I ran a smallholding in Aberdeenshire, and then worked for several years as a hands-on garden designer. So I came to painting a bit later in life, and I'm self-taught - as much by design as default: I just love experimenting and discovering my own techniques. Painting to me is a challenge, a journey, and each work seems to proceed along its own path, often taking me by surprise.

I have been painting in South Aberdeenshire since 2001, inspired by the local land- and seascape: the view of big skies and changeable seas from the cliffs of coastal Kinneff, where I live, or the deep red earth of the Mearns.
In my paintings I try to capture both stillness and motion (often linked with the emotion evoked) – and maybe these are not so much opposites as two sides of the same coin, seeking the core of the subject. I also produce vibrant abstracts and most recently I have been experimenting with stark bl/wh, rather minimalist, painting.

A lot of my work is done in acrylic on board, rather than on canvas, calling for a different kind of technique. I have developed a method of mounting board on an integral frame and the finished product looks like a box canvas, with painted sides, ready to hang - or to frame, if you wish. You will find my paintings work especially well in larger/modern rooms, with a bit of distance and space."

This week we have Jeannie Zelos as our Artist of the Week.

Jeannie was born and still lives in North Norfolk surrounded by beautiful scenery full of traditional woodlands, vast beaches and huge skies.

Jeannie says:

Art can be a solitary pursuit and since 2006 I've been running a free arts forum for artists and people interested in art, just type my name and forum into google and you'll find it. I've learned so much from other artists there, and hopefully we have all benefited from contact with others.
I paint in a variety of mediums from watercolours through to encaustic, a method used over 2,000 years ago. For me art is a journey and by not restricting myself to one media I have the freedom to take my art to a range of possibilities. Over the last few years I have extended my experience via personal study and professional tuition and now use watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils, and latest is the encaustic (beeswax) paints. I'm currently using the encaustics most of the while, seeking to reach the very essence of the subject through pure abstraction, and find that the beeswax - maybe because its such an organic material- works really well for this."

Artist of the Week - Peter Williams

Peter Williams is our Artist of the Week, this week. Peter's work was recently shortlisted and selected for the prestigious David Shepherd Wildlife Artist Of The Year award 2010, with an exhibition in The mall Galleries in London. The exhibition was very well attended, and Peter's painting "High and Mighty" (shown here) was awarded second place in the category "Animals in Action).

Peter's work is becoming increasingly sought after and collectable. He works in various media, with his graphite drawings and watercolours being most popular.

Peter is an entirely self taught UK artist, working out of his studio on the Suffolk coast.

Peter says:

"In 2002 I took the life changing step of becoming a full time artist. I was the feature artist for Hertfordshire Life magazine before moving to the East coast of Suffolk in 2005.
I expected to make my living here from local landscapes and coastal scenes. However I soon realized I would be better off finding a more niche area of the art market. Having always had immense interest in the great outdoors, I decided to exploit my passion for the old West and Native America as well as Wildlife. I haven’t looked back since.
Creating haunting, ephemeral Native American portraits, not trying to be historically accurate but attempting to portray palpable and arresting emotions, suspending reality and presenting the viewer with the wild, unchecked passions and stoic serenity of Native America.

Artist of the Week - Cherie Sullivan

This absolutely scrumptious image is by our current Artist of the week, Cherie Sullivan.

Cherie is a contemporary Scottish artist.

Her bold, distinctive, vibrant works are influenced by colour and nature. Preferring to work from photographs, rather than from life, Cherie can often be found photographing flowers and fruit. Some of these photos then, in turn, inspire her paintings. Working with acrylics, oils or in mixed media on box canvas, Cherie’s paintings are a bright and vivid representation of the natural world around us.

Cherie exhibits across Scotland, and has many works in private collections around the world. NHS Fife recently purchased 4 of Cherie’s paintings to be displayed in the Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

Cherie says:

“I enjoy taking macro shots of flower centres…these interesting photographs are often semi abstract by nature. I like to concentrate on their stamens, cropping the photos to get exactly the image I want. Once cropped, these images then form the basis for my paintings.

For my fruity paintings I use the same process, but tend to concentrate on the negative spaces between the fruits.”

Artist of the Week - Rachel McCullock

This week we have a new artist to Affordable British Art, as our Artist of the Week. Her name is Rachel McCullock.
Rachel started to paint simply for pleasure and very rapidly to her surprise and delight, her work generated a great deal of interest. This inspired her to experiment with innovative techniques and mixed media to develop her own style.

Rachel says "I aim to create bold, vibrant, emotive and energetic canvases. The paintings range from representational images to textural abstracts, from wildlife to majestic coastal scenes with a great deal in between. I like to think that the use of striking colour is the defining indicator of my work.”
Rachel has participated in many exhibitions throughout the UK to wide acclaim ; and has been published on calendars and Christmas and greetings cards. She is regularly invited to exhibit at the Artshed Gallery in Ware, Hertfordshire. Recently her work has been displayed at the Picturecraft Gallery, Holt, Norfolk. Rachel paints both for exhibition and by private and public commission.
Her latest large-scale commission is for the recently completed Child Protection Unit of the Lister Hospital , Stevenage, Hertfordshire where she will provide her unique style modern paintings to be hung in all its rooms, helping to create a sympathetic and appropriate atmosphere.

Artist of the Week - Donna Lowe-Fowler

This week we have Donna Lowe-Fowler as Artist of the Week. Donna says:
"I am a self taught contemporary artist, working from my studio in Sheffiled. I specialise in close up shots of flowers. In the past have completed short photography courses which has increased the good interpretation and availability of photographs I use for inspiration .
My Eye-catching bold, vibrant flowers in oils and acrylics will make a statement in any room. I am fascinated by the colours , shapes and folds in the flowers. I paint around the sides of the deep edge canvases so they are ready to hang. I was greatly encouraged in my painting when in 2007 when I won my first award in Sheffield ' Art in the Gardens' still life and flowers category this award was presented to me by Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough.
My artwork also includes Monochrome abstract Skylines of London and New York,also animals and scenery.
The painting look nice mounted on a painted piece of MDF painted in the chosen colour to enhance the painting , email me for examples , it will make your painting look larger and gives another dimention to the painting..

Artist of the Week - Diane Jennings

This week we have Diane Jennings as our Artist of the Week. Diane says: "I work in several different mediums including oil, acrylic and encaustic wax.
I love to paint bright, bold paintings to brighten any wall and I also paint quieter,calmer, more relaxing paintings too!
I am at my happiest when creating art,to see the painting develop before me is exciting each and every time!
To be creative is the very essence of who I am and it is my passion! I also teach people to paint in my very popular classes called 'Painting My Way'
I am a Professional Associate of the SAA (Society for All Artists) which means I carry their endorsement as a tutor and demonstrator.
I am also kept busy doing demonstrations for various art clubs and things like WI's too!Please get in touch for details."

The painting shown here is called "In the Breeze" and is A modern,contemporary painting of poppies and grasses. Bright and vibrant with lots of movement going on! The breeze on a hot summers day is gently moving the poppies among the foliage. Painted in acrylic -all the sides are painted and it has been varnished to protect it.

Artist of the Week - Amanda Hunt

Amanda Hunt is a contemporary Artist who has a real passion for all forms of painting and drawing.

She paints from her studio in the Berkshire countryside and started exhibiting her work in the summer of 2005.

Since then Amanda’s work has been attracting international attention as well as considerable interest throughout the UK. To date her paintings have been bought by collectors in America, Canada, South Africa and Singapore as well throughout Europe and the UK. The painting shown is called "Purple Hills III". It depicts a peaceful lakeland evening scene in relaxing purples inspired by the Cairngorms. This painting will provide a focal point for any room. The painting continues round the edges of this box canvas so it is ready to hang with no need for framing. This creates a very simple but effective style. This painting has been finished with a protective satin varnish and is on a deep edge box canvas.

Gaynor Henaghan is this weeks Artist of the Week.

Gaynor says: "Art is my passion, as well as my full time career. I was born, live and paint in sunny Yorkshire, UK.
I paint both contemporary and more traditional pieces, depending on the mood and what is influencing me at the time! My main inspiration is colour, light and structure, although ideas often come from the most unexpected places - from facial expressions to the spoken word... you'd be amazed!
I work a great deal with texture as it gives a whole new dimension to the artwork itself - capturing the visual aspect but also making you want to feel it - I love the fact that my work can be open to different interpretation by each person that views it - it can be endless, which is what I aim to achieve in my abstract work.

My art is regularly sold worldwide, including the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, Malta, as well as a great deal of work which remains in the UK, with both private and commercial clients.

Artist of the Week - Rosie Harper

Rosie Harper is our new Artist of the Week. Rosie is a published, professional British artist, now living and working in beautiful New Zealand.

She says: "I have been very fortunate in my artistic career and bless every day that I can pick up my brushes and create beautiful things in a sometimes ugly world. My work was published in Society Magazine in USA in 2005 on 3 occasions with my art as their front cover. I have several private collectors around the world with some of them owning up to 10 pieces. I work in a mainly Art Deco style with some Art Nouveau and Surrealism mixed in for good measure and I tend to go for bright and colourful with lots of detail rather than dark and sombre. Most of my pieces are large and are meant to own any wall they are placed upon. On average, these artworks take anything from 3 months to a year to complete as most are created in oil. The process also involves sketching the idea in Silverpoint and then applying the paint in layers, allowing the paint to dry thoroughly to enable a protective coat of varnish to be applied at the end. Because of the nature of my style, I use imagery from the Art Deco period together with my own interpretation. All of my ladies are based upon imagination, apart from my commissions, so if you have an idea for an artwork, please contact me to discuss. The limit is your own imagination. All artwork comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. The Certificate will be printed with the poetry description where applicable to the piece."

Artist of the Week - Audrey Greaves

This week Audrey Greaves is our Artist of the Week....and being a Greyhound lover and the owner of two rescue Greyhounds, I just had to choose this painting of Audrey's.

Audrey says: "This is a portait of a greyhound called Twinny that I did as a commission for someone. I painted it in oils on oil paper so it could be framed under glass. I can also paint on canvas and frame it as an oil. I began painting seriously in 1992 after joining an Art Club. I enjoy painting landscapes, flowers, wild life, portraits, pet portraits, abstract and naive paintings. At the moment I am painting a few still lifes in oils. My inspiration is found in the English landscape as well as scenes from abroad. I am also inspired by flowers in my own garden as well as parks and gardens that I visit and life in general. I paint in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media. My work has been hung in several exhibitions throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire over the last 17 years and also in galleries. While exhibiting at the Ilkley Art Exhibitions in 1998 I was elected an Associate of the British Society of Painters. I have done several successful portrait, pet portrait and landscape commissions from photographs and would be pleased to do more.
I am now designing and making jewellery which is also on my gallery."

Artist of the Week - Michelle Gibbs

This week we have Michelle Gibbs as our Artist of the Week. Michelle says of her work:
"Art is my life, and always has been. I have a GNVQ in advanced art and design, and a degree in Interior Design. Painting from a studio at home, I tend to be working on several projects simultaneously. Often returning to a piece trying something new and inspiring. Each design has something different and unique about it, making it a one off.
I have travelled the world, visiting inspiring places such as New York, Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Singapore, and New Zealand. Many of my inspirations are evident in my work. Colours mimic a time or a place.
From the blues and greens of the great barrier reef in Australia, to the orange and reds of the Fijian sunsets, travelling has brought vibrancy and energy into my work, through the unique combinations of colour and texture I am able to express my experiences and share them in a contemporary and abstract form. It is my aim to transform a space from a basic and simple room, into one filled with energy, inspiration, dedication and light.

Artist of the Week - Trevor Ferguson

Trevor Ferguson is our current Artist of the week. Trevor says:
"I was born & brought up on the north east coast of England but now live in West Yorkshire.
Having had a number of careers in the past – engineering draughtsman, bank official, school teacher and even some time in the military (Parachute Regiment) I am now able to indulge in my passion for painting which has now become my full time occupation – that and framing my own works and those of fellow artists.
I work nowadays in Alkyd oil which I find suits my style – acrylics dry too quickly for me and regular oils don’t let me get on with a piece as quickly as I would like.
I am fascinated by people – faces and postures.
I create scenes and pictures by using a number of photographs for inspiration & reference – moving people around until I can compose a layout which tells a story and maybe with some humour and lots of new things to find at each viewing of the painting.
My aim is to achieve realism while at the same time creating a scene or picture which may or may not exist in real life. Many of my works are based on French life.
My love of human faces prompts me to paint portraits – again using photographs – either supplied by clients or taken by myself I try to capture the character & personality of the sitter.
I have learned a lot by studying the techniques of the old masters and in some ways by trying to emulate them – I feel I might be half way there – the old part anyway – not too sure about the master part though.
My animal portraits are treated in the same way."

Artist of the Week - Paul Dixon

This week we have Paul Dixon as our Artist of the week. Paul paints in most media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels and never one to feel pigeon-holed, tackles most subjects - landscape, seascape, cityscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, surrealism and abstract.

He has previously exhibited at the Ferrens Art Gallery, Hull, the Leeds City Art Gallery, Y.T.V. Studios, Leeds, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds and the Art Shows at Ilkley where he was a prize winning artist who was elected a Companion of the International Guild of Artists. He was a regular exhibitor at the Valley Gardens Art Exhibitions in Harrogate and the Original Art Exhibitions at Addingham, Nr Ilkley, West Yorkshire. He has also had two paintings reproduced as limited edition prints.

He has completed various commissions in landscape and portraiture and has work in private collections as far afield as Italy, Germany, America and Canada.

Artist of the Week - Helen Davison

This time we have Helen Davison as our Artist of the Week. Helen is a professional, exhibiting artist from East Yorkshire. She specialises in Acrylic abstract paintings and also crafts beautiful little hand-made trinket boxes.
The painting shown is entitled "3 Wise Men And An Interloper" and is an abstract expressionist painting rendered in the 3 primary colours with outlines in black. It is influenced by Picasso's painting "The Three Dancers" and Helen says:
" In this painting, I have used the three primary colours in order to represent the 3 different elements in this painting. However, as the painting progressed, I noticed another "figure" appeared in thebackground so I decided to use him as well! "

This week, we have Tony Broadbent as our Artist of the week.

Tony Broadbent is a Contemporary Artist who paints mainly abstract, figurative and traditional art in all media. His work is best displayed on plain colour large expanse walls and is suitable for both minimalist and featured positioning. Tony's work is fast becoming highly collectible and has been recognised as a departure from the mundane.The painting shown above is titled: "In a minute"

Tony says:

This painting is one of a series I did which has been themed as Abstract Internalism.

One of only a few remaining and different to abstract expressionism........ where the actual action of painting donates the mood of the art in action - this way is the anti-thesis where the mood is none violent, overly expressive but the opposite, quiet, reflective, internal - perhaps a mood of peace, solitude and calm which transfers the mood in a different way, easier on the eye and feel to the observer."

Artist of the Week - Dani Bergson

Our Artist of the week, this week is Dani Bergson.
Dani Says: "I grew up in North london in the seventies. As a child I loved all the Arts and knew that eventually I would pursue a career either performing or painting. I was especially fond of drawing plants and animals and would spend many hours in my back garden sketching flowers and the family cats.

I started my formal training at Middlesex University in London where I completed a Foundation course in Art and Design. I then proceeded to The University of Central England in Birmingham to study for a degree in Printed Textiles.
I graduated with Honours in 1996 and moved to Bournemouth for my first professional job as a Textile Designer at Monkwell Fabrics. After gaining 2 years useful studio experience I landed a job with Osborne & Little in London designing wallpapers and upholstery fabrics. Working for such a well known and prestigious furnishing company was fantastic and I learnt how to express myself through colour, texture and pattern.
In 2000 I took the bold step of becoming a freelance artist and illustrator to pursue my first love, painting. Most of my artwork is commissioned for publication as greeting cards, though I have also illustrated children’s books, prints, posters, and wrapping paper. My original artwork has been displayed for sale in several galleries throughout the UK.
My relationship with Washington Green started in 2003 through their greeting card company. I have since designed three ranges of cards for them as well as several posters and Limited Edition Prints. I have sold numerous canvas originals and worked on bespoke pieces for individual clients.
I more recently designed a range of 12 paintings with end use as Calenders/Cards and books. I have had a few years out having children. My most recent pieces are highly decorative contemporary Indian inspired Elephants. I hope you enjoy my work and please contact me directly for more info or PRIVATE COMMISSIONS."

Artist of the Week - Melanie Barrett

This week we have Melanie Barrett as our Artist of the Week.
After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2003, Melanie went on to obtain a Masters in Painting from Wimbledon School of Art in 2004. Since then she has been continuing to paint and draw, focusing on portraiture, and in particular the narrative within painting. She has taught Art in schools in Mexico and Uganda, and to date has exhibited in various venues in Newcastle, Hackney, Kings Cross, the Discerning Eye Exhibition 2003, London Art Fair 2005, and in Glasgow for the regional finals of Channel Five's Big Art Competition.

Melanie says: "I am fascinated by the drama that can be created by the interplay of light and dark within a composition, and am preoccupied with recreating the beauty that can be captured in fleeting moments of every day life.
My work is heavily influenced by photography and I take inspiration from the work of Sickert, Degas and more recently, Tim Gardner."

Melanie now lives in County Durham with her husband Lewis, daughter Lily-Ann, and baby Daniel.

Artist of the Week - Tina Ashton

This week our Artist of the Week is Tina Ashton. At the age of 39 Tina gave up her then career in administration, to returned to full time education in Art and Design. Creating art and particularly painting again was a “very personal and emotional awakening” she recollects, and indeed she hopes it is just the beginning of a long creative journey.
In 2003 Tina was proud to win the prestigious Malcolm Kendal Award in recognition of her talented contribution towards a motivated and artistic awareness. In the years to follow Tina went on to exhibit her work regularly across the UK, amongst them several solo exhibitions and a group exhibition at one of London’s Cork Street Galleries.

During the past 10 years much of Tina’s collection of work has been dominated by her modern portraiture in Acrylic. These bold, colourful portraits of today’s woman have proved very successful for her, although they are constantly evolving and are just a small part of a much wider body of work these days.

More recently, from her studio on the edge of the Buckinghamshire countryside, Tina has been painting on the theme of Love and Romance and her collection of semi-abstract paintings inspired by Lovers has been selling to private and corporate collectors across the world. Tina has a love of all things romantic and particularly old black and white movies which has fed and inspired this series of work, although the strong colours and loose fluidity of these new works are a much more modern statement. “I believe one of the greatest challenges for an artist is to display on canvas the special and intimate moments that lovers share and I hope that I go some way towards achieving that” Says Tina.

I particularly love the one shown above....entitled "Pink Meets Blue".....at first glance it looks like an imaginative, organic abstract work, yet on closer inspection, the true nature and passion of the work is discovered.

Artist of the Week - Angela Arnold

Angela Arnold is this weeks Artist of the week. Angela is a full time professional Artist working from her studio at home in rural Scotland. I particularly like this view of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Angela says:

"I started out as a writer, with two books published (on psychological astrology, which I also practise), as well as occasional poetry. For thirteen years I ran a smallholding in Aberdeenshire, and then worked for several years as a hands-on garden designer. So I came to painting a bit later in life, and I'm self-taught - as much by design as default: I just love experimenting and discovering my own techniques. Painting to me is a challenge, a journey, and each work seems to proceed along its own path, often taking me by surprise.
I have been painting in South Aberdeenshire since 2001, inspired by the local land- and seascape: the view of big skies and changeable seas from the cliffs of coastal Kinneff, where I live, or the deep red earth of the Mearns.
In my paintings I try to capture both stillness and motion (often linked with the emotion evoked) – and maybe these are not so much opposites as two sides of the same coin, seeking the core of the subject. I also produce vibrant abstracts and most recently I have been experimenting with stark bl/wh, rather minimalist, painting.
A lot of my work is done in acrylic on board, rather than on canvas, calling for a different kind of technique. I have developed a method of mounting board on an integral frame and the finished product looks like a box canvas, with painted sides, ready to hang - or to frame, if you wish."

Artist of the Week - Jeannie Zelos

This week Jeannie Zelos is our Artist of the Week. I have chosen this image of Jeannies as it is full of the promise of Summer - when the Sunflowers are growing rapidly and beaming out their golden colours to warm the soul.
Jeannie says :
"I was born and still live in North Norfolk; beautiful scenery full of traditional woodlands, vast beaches and huge skies. Why move?!
I've been painting for a number of years now and extending my repertoire of materials as time progresses and I delve further into the world of art.I describe my style as naive, and myself as a Colourist. My work has very vibrant colour ranges, often not what you would expect but it works!
Art can be a solitary pursuit and since 2006 I've been running a free arts forum for artists and people interested in art, just type my name and forum into google and you'll find it. I've learned so much from other artists there, and hopefully we have all benefited from contact with others.
I paint in a variety of mediums from watercolours through to encaustic, a method used over 2,000 years ago. For me art is a journey and by not restricting myself to one media I have the freedom to take my art to a range of possibilities. Over the last few years I have extended my experience via personal study and professional tuition and now use watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils, and latest is the encaustic (beeswax) paints. I'm currently using the encaustics most of the while, seeking to reach the very essence of the subject through pure abstraction, and find that the beeswax - maybe because its such an organic material- works really well for this.
My work is becoming more sought after with sales both home and abroad. It can be seen on several websites and by appointment at my studio. Please remember it's a working studio ( read: untidy!) - not a gallery and it would be helpful if you could indicate both the subject matter or medium and price range you are interested in, then I can arrange to have these ready for viewing. Artist of the Week - Peter Williams

This week we have Peter Williams as our Artist of the week. Peter's stunning painting 'High And Mighty' (shown on the right) has been shortlisted for the DSWF Wildlife Artist Of The Year 2010. The competition is open to art professionals and amateurs worldwide, there are literally thousands of entries which are judged by a panel.
The shortlisted entries will be exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London 24th-29th May where all the art will be for sale.
This is an extremely high profile art exhibition and "anyone who is anyone" in wildlife conservation circles will be at the preview evening, where 50% of sales go to the DSWF to help endangered species around the world.

Peter says: " I use many different media including pastel, coloured or graphite pencil and gouache but I am particularly well known for watercolour work. Blending diffused colour with confident composition and intricate detail, I am able to achieve a unique vibrancy unequalled by many other watercolourists.

Having always had immense interest in the great outdoors, animals, wildlife and particularly horses, I have most recently become best known for my haunting, ephemeral Native American portraits.
I don’t try to be historically accurate, but attempt to portray palpable and arresting emotions, suspending reality to present the viewer with the wild, unchecked passions and stoic serenity of Native America.

Artist of the Week - Cherie Sullivan

This week, Cherie Sullivan is our Artist of the Week. Cherie is a contemporary Scottish artist.
Her bold, distinctive, vibrant works are influenced by colour and nature. Preferring to work from photographs, rather than from life, Cherie can often be found photographing flowers and fruit. Some of these photos then, in turn, inspire her paintings. Working with acrylics, oils or in mixed media on box canvas, Cherie’s paintings are a bright and vivid representation of the natural world around us.
Cherie exhibits across Scotland, and has many works in private collections around the world. NHS Fife recently purchased 4 of Cherie’s paintings to be displayed in the Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline. Cherie Says:

“I enjoy taking macro shots of flower centres…these interesting photographs are often semi abstract by nature. I like to concentrate on their stamens, cropping the photos to get exactly the image I want. Once cropped, these images then form the basis for my paintings.
For my fruity paintings I use the same process, but tend to concentrate on the negative spaces between the fruits.”

Claire Losada is this week's Artist of the Week.
Claire says :
"I am a self representing artist and mostly my work reflects my own moods and emotions.
I use my art as a vehicle to convey my emotional states and well being, through use of colour and application of chosen media. Vivid hues translate to give a representation of moods that enlighten the onlooker, where no explanation is necessary.
The paintings, of varying subject matter are set to convey messages through the very essence of their simplicity. The use of subdued ochre hues, appear unsettling purely through the use of colour but a sunset or a sunrise can depict a sense of harmony and serenity and an enviable state of emotion.

These paintings are intended to communicate and reach out to the onlooker, invoking a real emotion. At that moment they are influenced by the artwork, it is having an effect on their mood and state of mind. It is communicating with the onlooker by the very essence of its existence, borne from the emotions and mood of its creator.
The vehicle of paint has been used as a way of expressing myself and venting emotions experienced through the stresses of everyday life. Experiencing a roller coaster of emotions, I sought a vehicle for communicating and retaining my sanity that turned sometimes negative emotions, into something productive and positive.
Some of us have seen sanity, if only in a vision but for me, my vision is communicated through my work.

Artist of the Week - Liz Lees

Liz has been drawing and painting all her life. Her first work to be noticed were the little houses she drew on the wall beside her bed in a hotel while the family were on holiday. Deciding not to be influenced by a formal art education, Liz studied Zoology and Botany enjoying the concentration of detailed observation and drawing. From an early age Liz was involved in theatre, influenced by her ventriloquist father. She gained her Stage Designers and Actors Equity card working at North East Theatre in Aberdeen. In 1984 she achieved a Post Graduate Diploma from Guildford School of Acting and Dance. On moving to Manchester to pursue her acting career she performed in television in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Brookside and on stage at the Royal Exchange and on the Edinburgh Fringe. She formed her own theatre company Green Light Theatre writing, directing and performing in shows with environmental themes across the North West of England. She also developed training programmes passing on the skills she has learnt in performance, set design and writing.
Finding Purlieknowe brought Liz back to the North East of Scotland. The cottage was the perfect base in which to show her work while enjoying one of the best views of the fishing village of Catterline. As well as creating her art work Liz was promoting her professional writing and acting skills with groups in Aberdeen. Now recently returned to her roots in London Liz plans to have her work seen in exhibtions and galleries here.

Artist of the Week - Lindi Kirwin

This week, Lindi Kirwin is our Artist of the Week. Lindi was born in Bowdon, Cheshire in 1959 and after bringing up her family, she went on to pursue a successful career as a professional Artist, exhibited in many galleries and selling her work to private collectors, worldwide.

Based at her studio on the 3rd floor at Vernon Mill in Stockport, Lindi’s contemporary paintings are inspired by many of the Old Masters, and of today’s artists, Jenny Saville; yet in contrast to her morbid reflection of the human form, she admires the romantic beauty of Pino Daeni’s style. Egon Schiele is also a firm favourite for inspiration.

Lindi’s passion of figurative work is tastefully provocative and sensual; her land/seascapes are vibrant and atmospheric; all these paintings are executed in her specialism of dry-brush acrylic, using no water. However, it is evident that she is also recognised for her work in oils and mixed media, and her humorous pen illustrations. She uses her photos and sketches for reference and is also inspired by proverbs, quotes, poetry text, which she will successfully interpret into abstract paintings. I particularly love this painting...entitled "Debbie". It is a very clever excercise in light and shade....and it's effects on the contours of the body.

Artist of the Week - Diane Jennings

This week we have Diane jennings as our Artist of the Week. Diane, is a professional Artist and very successful Art Tutor. She is a Professional Associate of the SAA (Society for All Artists) which means she carries their endorsement as a tutor and demonstrator.
Diane's work is varied in subject matter, so I had lots to choose from, but decided on this bright and cheerful picture of some sunflowers.....just what you need to cheer you up when it's overcast and miserable.
Diane paints mainly in oils on canvas, although she also uses acrylics and Encaustic wax, holding classes for beginners and improvers in all 3 media, in her "painting my way" workshops. She will be holding "Painting My Way" classes most weeks this year.
There will be classes for the more advanced students as well as the regular ones for beginners. Diane's classes are proving very popular and last year she held a very successful exhibition of her students work.

Artist of the Week - Amanda Hunt

Our Artist of the week, this week, is Amanda Hunt.
Amanda is a professional, contemporary artist who has a real passion for all forms of painting and drawing. She paints from her studio in the Berkshire countryside and started exhibiting her work in the summer of 2005.
Since then Amanda’s work has been attracting international attention as well as considerable interest throughout the UK. To date her paintings have been bought by collectors in America, Canada, South Africa and Singapore as well throughout Europe and the UK.The painting shown is called African Sunset view II and is a vivid African Sunset depicted with umbrella thorn (acacia tortilis) trees and distant mountains. Warm oranges, yellows and fresh blues mingle to create a sky alive with colour. The painting continues round the edges of the frame making this ready for immediate hanging with no need for framing.

Well, after having a week of being unable to submita Blog entry, we are now back to operational status....I.T....dont you just love it.
Anyhow....every cloud has a silver lining, so they say....and this has meant that our Artist of the week, Gaynor Henaghan, gets to stay the AOW for another week as we were unable to do her Blog, Facebook or Twitter entries.
Gaynor works from her studio in Yorkshire. She says:
"Art is my passion, as well as my full time career. I was born, live and paint in sunny Yorkshire, UK.
I paint both contemporary and more traditional pieces, depending on the mood and what is influencing me at the time! My main inspiration is colour, light and structure, although ideas often come from the most unexpected places - from facial expressions to the spoken word... you'd be amazed!
I work a great deal with texture as it gives a whole new dimension to the artwork itself - capturing the visual aspect but also making you want to feel it - I love the fact that my work can be open to different interpretation by each person that views it - it can be endless, which is what I aim to achieve in my abstract work.
My art is regularly sold worldwide, including the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, Malta, as well as a great deal of work which remains in the UK, with both private and commercial clients.

Artist of the Week - Rosie Harper

This week we have Rosie Harper as our Artist of the week. Rosie is a published, professional British artist, now living and working in beautiful New Zealand.
She says: "I have been very fortunate in my artistic career and bless every day that I can pick up my brushes and create beautiful things in a sometimes ugly world. My work was published in Society Magazine in USA in 2005 on 3 occasions with my art as their front cover. I have several private collectors around the world with some of them owning up to 10 pieces. I work in a mainly Art Deco style with some Art Nouveau and Surrealism mixed in for good measure and I tend to go for bright and colourful with lots of detail rather than dark and sombre. Most of my pieces are large and are meant to own any wall they are placed upon. On average, these artworks take anything from 3 months to a year to complete as most are created in oil. The process also involves sketching the idea in Silverpoint and then applying the paint in layers, allowing the paint to dry thoroughly to enable a protective coat of varnish to be applied at the end. Because of the nature of my style, I use imagery from the Art Deco period together with my own interpretation. All of my ladies are based upon imagination, apart from my commissions, so if you have an idea for an artwork, please contact me to discuss. The limit is your own imagination."

Artist of the Week - Audrey Greaves

Our Artist of the week, this week, is Audrey Greaves. She began painting seriously in 1992 after joining an Art Club. Audrey enjoys painting landscapes, flowers, wild life, portraits and pet portraits. Recently, she has been doing abstract and naive paintings and producing original hand-made jewellery.

Audrey says: "My inspiration is found in the English landscape as well as scenes from abroad. I am also inspired by flowers in my own garden as well as parks and gardens that I visit. I paint in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media.
My work has been hung in several exhibitions throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire over the last 17 years and also in galleries. While exhibiting at the Ilkley Art Exhibitions in 1998 I was elected an Associate of the British Society of Painters. I have done several successful portrait, pet portrait and landscape commissions from photographs and would be pleased to do more.
I am now designing and making jewellery which is also on my gallery. "

This week, Michelle Gibbs is our arist of the week.
Michelle says:
Art is my life, and always has been. I have a GNVQ in advanced art and design, and a degree in Interior Design. Painting from a studio at home, I tend to be working on several projects simultaneously. Often returning to a piece trying something new and inspiring. Each design has something different and unique about it, making it a one off.
I have travelled the world, visiting inspiring places such as New York, Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Singapore, and New Zealand. Many of my inspirations are evident in my work. Colours mimic a time or a place.
From the blues and greens of the great barrier reef in Australia, to the orange and reds of the Fijian sunsets, travelling has brought vibrancy and energy into my work, through the unique combinations of colour and texture I am able to express my experiences and share them in a contemporary and abstract form. It is my aim to transform a space from a basic and simple room, into one filled with energy, inspiration, dedication and light.

Artist of the Week - Trevor Ferguson

This week we have Trevor Ferguson as our Artist of the week. Trevor born & brought up on the north east coast of England but now lives in West Yorkshire.
Trevor says "I work nowadays in Alkyd oil which I find suits my style – acrylics dry too quickly for me and regular oils don’t let me get on with a piece as quickly as I would like.
I am fascinated by people – faces and postures.
I create scenes and pictures by using a number of photographs for inspiration & reference – moving people around until I can compose a layout which tells a story and maybe with some humour and lots of new things to find at each viewing of the painting.
My aim is to achieve realism while at the same time creating a scene or picture which may or may not exist in real life. Many of my works are based on French life.
My love of human faces prompts me to paint portraits – again using photographs – either supplied by clients or taken by myself I try to capture the character & personality of the sitter.
I have learned a lot by studying the techniques of the old masters and in some ways by trying to emulate them – I feel I might be half way there – the old part anyway – not too sure about the master part though.
My animal portraits are treated in the same way."

Artist of the Week - Paul Dixon

This week we have Paul Dixon as our Artist of the week.Paul paints in most media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels and never one to feel pigeon-holed, tackles most subjects - landscape, seascape, cityscape, portraiture, still life, fantasy, surrealism and abstract.
As it's nearing Valentines Day I thought I'd choose this painting of Paul's. Full of Romance and atmosphere, it's entitled "Evening Glow" and depicts a couple walking in the evening glow, wrapped in togetherness. It's one of Paul's original watercolour paintings and comes presented in a double mount (cream outer mount and a green inner) ready for framing under glass. Artist of the Week - Helen Davison

This week we have Helen Davison as our Artist of the week. Helen is an artist from East Yorkshire who specialises in acrylic abstracts on canvas.
The painting shown is called Making Tracks.
It is one of three paintings that Helen has painted specifically for a gallery in Bridlington, East Yorkshire. It is worked in acrylic and inks on box canvas, however Helen's work is noy limited to painting. She is also a maker of lovely little decorative lidded boxes and miniature canvases on easles for display, all currently displayed for sale on Affordable British Art.

Artist of the Week - Ros Callander

Ros Callander is a professional contemporary Scottish artist. She paints mainly sunset paintings, seascapes and landscapes and her art has been described as “arresting and atmospheric”. Ros also does portraiture, both people and animals, however her main love is nature and it’s influences on her native Scotland. Ros’s work, which is still very affordable, is increasing in popularity, often leading to waiting lists for her commissioned pieces.
The painting shown is called "Evening Reflections" and is painted in Acrylic paints on a 6ft x 3ft box canvas. This is one of Ros's larger works, although she enjoys painting on a wide variety of sized canvases.
She has recently been concentrating more on drawing, due to a back injury, and you can see a selection of her pencil drawings along with more of her paintings, in her gallery at Affordable British Art.

Tony Broadbent - Artist of the Week.

This week we have Tony Broadbent as our Artist of the week. Tony is a practising, professional artist who paints mainly abstract, figurative and traditional art in all media.
His work is best displayed on plain colour large expanse walls and is suitable for both minimalist and featured positioning.
Highly collectible his work has been recognised as a departure from the mundane.
Although best known for his larger paintings, Tony has recently completed a series of new and previously unseen small abstract works. These paintings are framed under glass, and have recently been added to his gallery on Affordable British Art. I particularly like this one, shown. The work on ' Blue Aspect ' itself is delicate and has many applications but at first sight is a finished and obvious work, this tends to be my usual approach to semi-representational work such as the sea under a blue sky. Upon study the nuances of the techniques employed can be seen which presents something new to the viewer each time they look at it. It is a rewarding and subtle piece which amalgamates into a full scene at a longer focal length.

Artist of the Week - John Boyle

Our artist of the week, John Boyle, has become a respected and established artist in his local area, gaining press coverage by hosting a one man portrait exhibition and taking part in group/collective art shows. He paints in a variety of styles using
mainly Acrylic and Oil paints. The majority of his commisions these days come mainly for portraiture work, where he paints the subjects from photographs.
John has always been interested in Art from a young age, and continued his interest as a hobby throughout his adult life. Now, finding more time, he has been able to commit himself more to his art and has sold paintings both locally and abroad. John will now be taking part in regular exhibitions where his work can be viewed and bought.

I particulraly like this painting - John painted it as a commission from a client who loved John Singer Seargent's Lady Agnew of Lochnaw and wanted to have a copy done. If you compare this painting to the original, it will give you a very good idea of John's attention to detail and ability to capture a true likeness.

Artist of the week - Melanie Barrett

Our Artist of the week is Melanie Barrett. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2003, Melanie went on to obtain a Masters in Painting from Wimbledon School of Art in 2004. Since then she has been continuing to paint and draw, focusing on portraiture, and in particular the narrative within painting. I particularly like this landscape painting of Melanie's....especially with all the recent snow, ice and cold weather.....this is a timely reminder of the promise of Spring to come. I love the light streaming through the trees.

Melanie has taught Art in schools in Mexico and Uganda, and to date has exhibited in various venues in Newcastle, Hackney, Kings Cross, the Discerning Eye Exhibition 2003, London Art Fair 2005, and in Glasgow for the regional finals of Channel Five's Big Art Competition.

Artist of the Week - Angela Arnold

Our Artist of the week is Angela Arnold. Angela spent most of her youth on the Continent: born in Germany, she has also lived in France, Spain, Holland, Belgium...finally settling in Scotland in 1976. Angela says:
"I have been painting in South Aberdeenshire since 2001, inspired by the local land- and seascape: the view of big skies and changeable seas from the cliffs of coastal Kinneff, where I live, or the deep red earth of the Mearns."

The painting shown is an atmospheric depiction of winter at its most picturesque, with snow sculpted into powerful drifts and my little cottage just visible."

Angela started out as a writer, with two books published (on psychological astrology, which she also practises), as well as occasional poetry. For thirteen years she ran a smallholding in Aberdeenshire, and then worked for several years as a hands-on garden designer. She came to painting a bit later in life, and is self-taught - "....as much by design as default: I just love experimenting and discovering my own techniques. Painting to me is a challenge, a journey, and each work seems to proceed along its own path, often taking me by surprise.
In my paintings I try to capture both stillness and motion (often linked with the emotion evoked) – and maybe these are not so much opposites as two sides of the same coin, seeking the core of the subject. I also produce vibrant abstracts and most recently I have been experimenting with stark black and white, rather minimalist, painting.

A lot of my work is done in acrylic on board, rather than on canvas, calling for a different kind of technique. I have developed a method of mounting board on an integral frame and the finished product looks like a box canvas, with painted sides, ready to hang - or to frame, if you wish."

Artist of the week - Jeannie Zelos

Jeannie was born and still lives in North Norfolk. She says " ...with beautiful scenery full of traditional woodlands, vast beaches and huge skies. Why move?!
I've been painting for a number of years now and extending my repertoire of materials as time progresses and I delve further into the world of art.I describe my style as naive, and myself as a Colourist. My work has very vibrant colour ranges, often not what you would expect but it works!
Art can be a solitary pursuit and since 2006 I've been running a free arts forum for artists and people interested in art, just type my name and forum into google and you'll find it. I've learned so much from other artists there, and hopefully we have all benefited from contact with others.
I paint in a variety of mediums from watercolours through to encaustic, a method used over 2,000 years ago. For me art is a journey and by not restricting myself to one media I have the freedom to take my art to a range of possibilities. Over the last few years I have extended my experience via personal study and professional tuition and now use watercolours, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylics, oils, and latest is the encaustic (beeswax) paints. I'm currently using the encaustics most of the while, seeking to reach the very essence of the subject through pure abstraction, and find that the beeswax - maybe because its such an organic material- works really well for this. "

Artist of the Week - Peter Williams

Our Artist of the week is Peter Williams. Peter is a self taught UK artist, working out of his studio on the Suffolk coast where he lives with his long term partner Jenny and large German Shepherd dog.

Of his work, Peter says:
"I use many different media including pastel, coloured or graphite pencil and gouache but I am particularly well known for watercolour work. Blending diffused colour with confident composition and intricate detail, I am able to achieve a unique vibrancy unequalled by many other watercolourists.

Having always had immense interest in the great outdoors, animals, wildlife and particularly horses, I have most recently become best known for my haunting, ephemeral Native American portraits.
I don’t try to be historically accurate, but attempt to portray palpable and arresting emotions, suspending reality to present the viewer with the wild, unchecked passions and stoic serenity of Native America.

Born in 1952 I had a varied working life which included the regular British Army, college tutor, computer analyst and lorry driver. Throughout all of these times I always found time to create art of some kind in my spare time. In 2002 I took the life changing step of becoming a full time artist. I was the feature artist for Hertfordshire Life magazine before moving to the East coast of Suffolk in 2005. I expected to make my living here from local landscapes and coastal scenes. However I soon realized I would be better off finding a more niche area of the art market and decided to exploit my passion for the old West and Native America. I haven’t looked back since. I have had quite a lot of success selling prints and originals in the USA but have also been pleasantly surprised to find many collectors here in the UK. Of course I still create all other genre when the mood takes me, particularly wildlife and horses, and work to commission whenever requested. "

Artist of the Week - Cherie Sullivan

Cherie Sullivan is our artist of the week this week.

A contemporary Scottish artist, her bold, distinctive, vibrant works are influenced by colour and nature. Preferring to work from photographs, rather than from life, Cherie can often be found photographing flowers and fruit. Some of these photos then, in turn, inspire her paintings. Working with acrylics, oils or in mixed media on box canvas, Cherie’s paintings are a bright and vivid representation of the natural world around us.

Cherie exhibits across Scotland, and has many works in private collections around the world. NHS Fife recently purchased 4 of Cherie’s paintings to be displayed in the Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

“I enjoy taking macro shots of flower centres…these interesting photographs are often semi abstract by nature. I like to concentrate on their stamens, cropping the photos to get exactly the image I want. Once cropped, these images then form the basis for my paintings.
For my fruity paintings I use the same process, but tend to concentrate on the negative spaces between the fruits.”

Artist of the week - Kosana Marton

Kosana Marton is our new featured Artist of the week. Kosana is a Scottish artist based in Fife. Originally from East Kilbride, she studied art and design in Glasgow after completing her secondary education and, after a break from the arts, returned to study fine art at Edinburgh College of Art in 1991.

She takes her inspiration from nature; surroundings, colour, light and texture all play a part in helping her to create contemporary paintings using acrylic, mixed media and watercolour. Her subject matter varies dependent on her mood at the time, ranging from landscapes to abstract. She also enjoys figurative work like the one shown here.

She doesn’t work from sketch books, preferring to work from reality, photographs or memories. Her paintings start as a rough idea in her mind’s eye when a basic colour palette is also decided. However, from that point on, the rest of the painting evolves spontaneously on the canvas until completion.

Kosana has her work in private collections throughout the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand. The NHS also purchased 9 paintings for permanent display the Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline. She exhibits throughout the year at various venues/galleries.

"I am a self representing artist and mostly my work represent my own moods and emotions.

She formed her own theatre company Green Light Theatre writing, directing and performing in shows with environmental themes across the North West of England. She also developed training programmes passing on the skills she has learnt in performance, set design and writing.
Liz was influenced by the multicultural area of Old Trafford where she lived in Manchester, to create her quirky people pictures. Frequent visits to North Wales beaches and mountains brought a contrast to the city and in her work.

Artist of the Week - Lindi Kirwin

Lindi Kirwin is our Artist of the Week this time. Lindi is a professional Artist, exhibiting in many galleries and selling her work to private collectors, worldwide.

Based at her studio on the 3rd floor at Vernon Mill in Stockport, Lindi’s contemporary paintings are inspired by many of the Old Masters, and of today’s artists, Jenny Saville; yet in contrast to her morbid reflection of the human form, she admires the romantic beauty of Pino Daeni’s style. Egon Schiele is also a firm favourite for inspiration.

Lindi’s passion of figurative work is tastefully provocative and sensual. The image shown is called "Alone in the Dark"; her land/seascapes are vibrant and atmospheric; all these paintings are executed in her specialism of dry-brush acrylic, using no water. However, it is evident that she is also recognised for her work in oils and mixed media, and her humorous pen illustrations. She uses her photos and sketches for reference and is also inspired by proverbs, quotes, poetry text, which she will successfully interpret into abstract paintings.

In 2006, she was approached by Dorling Kindersley publishers to use examples of her work in their art books. She has also recently had a very successful partnership with Durer's, producing a highly unusual and individual piece, auctioned for charity and bought by Theo Paphitas - of Dragon's Den fame.

Artist of The Week - Amanda Hunt

This week, Amanda Hunt is our new Artist of the Week.

Amanda is a contemporary Artist who has a real passion for all forms of painting and drawing.

She paints from her studio in the Berkshire countryside and started exhibiting her work in the summer of 2005.

Since then Amanda’s work has been attracting international attention as well as considerable interest throughout the UK. To date her paintings have been bought by collectors in America, Canada, South Africa and Singapore as well throughout Europe and the UK. Amanda also accepts regular commissions.

Being a lover of all things sky, I particularly like this painting....it's a calming sunset scene from the Algonquin National Park in North East Canada with fir trees silhouetted in the still water.

This week, we have Gaynor Henaghan as Artist of the Week. Gaynor paints both contemporary and more traditional pieces, depending on the mood and what is influencing her at the time! Her main inspiration is colour, light and structure, although ideas often come from the most unexpected places - from facial expressions to the spoken word.
Gaynor works a great deal with texture as it gives a whole new dimension to the artwork itself - capturing the visual aspect but also making you want to touch it.
The painting featured here, is an original pastel painting of a scene from the beautiful Greek town of Parga.

Artist of The Week - Rosie Harper

This week's Artist of the Week is Rosie Harper. Rosie is a published professional British artist, living and working in New Zealand. She is best known for her amazing Art Deco style paintings....a stunning example of which I have posted here. Rosie's work was published in Society Magazine in USA in 2005 on 3 occasions with her art as their front cover. She works in a mainly Art Deco style with some Art Nouveau and Surrealism mixed in for good measure and tends to go for bright and colourful with lots of detail rather than dark and sombre. Most of her pieces are large and are meant to own any wall they are placed upon. On average, these artworks take anything from 3 months to a year to complete as most are created in oil. The process also involves sketching the idea in Silverpoint and then applying the paint in layers, allowing the paint to dry thoroughly to enable a protective coat of varnish to be applied at the end.

Artist of The Week - Audrey Greaves

The Artist of the week this week, is Audrey Greaves. Audrey is a self-taught artist for whom inspiration is found in the English landscape as well as scenes from abroad. She is also inspired by flowers in her own garden as well as parks and gardens that she visits. Audrey paints in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media.

Her subject matter ranges from beautiful floral work, like the image shown, to Butterflies, wildlife and people and animal portraits. Audrey also has some of her unique hand-made jewellery in her gallery.

I particularly love this oil painting. I love the way Audrey ahs utilised a combination of soft and harder edges, as well as lighting, to highlight the poppy.
